Motorcycle Helmet
For motorcycle enthusiasts, the motorcycle helmet is sometimes considered to be the most important part of motorcycle gear. While the helmet does protect the most important part of the body – the head – the other bits and pieces should not be ignored. For total safety when riding a motorcycle, it is important to keep in mind all the parts of the body. There are many different pieces of motorcycle gear available for the entire body that will ensure that you are as safe as possible in the case of an accident.
As it has been said, the motorcycle helmet is the most important part of motorcycle gear. A full helmet offer the most protection for the rider but there are also half and three-quarter helmets available though some training areas forbid the use of any but full helms. Most people like to take their helmets and personalize them in some way and there are also a number of different designs for helmets available out there. Keep in mind, however, that another important task of motorcycle gear is to be visible to other motorists. White, or brightly colored helmets are more visible than dark helmets and many accidents can be avoided by wearing a brighter helmet.
Most full motorcycle helmets come equipped with a visor but when using a half or three-quarter helmet it is important to wear protective goggles. Primarily they can make the riding experience better as you do not have to squint into the wind that makes your eyes water. On the other, more important, hand is the fact that they stop pebbles or insects flying into your eyes at speed. Most full helmets sufficiently protect the ears as well, but in those cases where it does not, earplugs should be worn to protect the ears from the noise of the wind at high speeds. At very high speeds (60 mph+) damage to the hearing can occur in a very short time.
Aside from motorcycles helmets, other motorcycle gear includes the jacket, vest, pants and gloves. Most of these articles are made from leather or other lighter material like Kevlar or cordura. The jackets are often reinforced with padding around the elbows, shoulders and spine while the pants are reinforced around the hips and knees. Gloves differ from each other though most protect the knuckles and fingers while still allowing enough flexibility to adequately grip and control the motorcycle. Some gloves even protect the wrists. Vests do not necessarily involve any extra physical protection but make seeing the rider easier by adding more reflective strips – especially at night.
The average motorcycle user does not need much more than this to keep themselves safe on their machines. The motorcycle helmet still remains the most important part, however, and should never be forgotten. There are other parts as well that are more often used by professional riders than casual riders but wearing them will never be a bad idea. Always remember – safety first!
